Members of the Washington Area Music Association recently voted for Carey to receive the 2010 Contemporary Folk Vocalist prize. At the Awards Gala, Carey’s acceptance speech (well, sentence!) included special thanks to Azalea City Recordings label-mates and gratitude for the D.C. area’s incredibly diverse community of musicians, who really do go the extra mile to appreciate and support one another. Verily, it’s true. Check out the talented nominees and winners here: http://wamadc.com/wama/wammies/wnoms25.htm. Maybe you’ll find yourself spending your lunchtime looking up their cool music clips on the Web!

A NEW SONG RECORDED

Carey just finished recording a great cover song for Azalea City’s upcoming fourth Sampler CD. The song features Marcy Marxer (percussion), Jon Carroll (background vocals, keyboard, accordian, guitar, background vocals, percussion), Dave Marsh (bass) and Bob Williams (guitar). Engineer/co-Producer Chris Murphy of RHL Audio bowled a perfect score (as always) with this one. The song has a tasty beat and deceptively simple lyrics, served to you in a luscious bowl of harmony. The new Azalea Sampler will be available starting May 1st at the record label’s release concert in (where else?) Takoma Park, MD. Further details will emerge soon…

MID-ATLANTIC SONG COMPETITION AWARD

Carey has won the Silver Award in the Children’s category of the Mid-Atlantic Song Competition (MASC) sponsored by the Songwriters’ Association of Washington, which receives entries from far beyond the mid-Atlantic region. She and enchanting hammered dulcimer player Jody Marshall will perform the winning song at the Awards Gala on January 23rd at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA. Please check the Calendar page for more details about this SRO annual event.

The winning song, “Who Do I Love?,” is an unusual lullaby where the singer is inviting the young one to choose to spend some quiet time together just greeting the stars…or even to stay awake and share how the child felt about his/her day. The song is on Carey’s Peace of Wild Things CD, but will also be included in a compilation of the winning compositions. Here’s a link to find out more about the Songwriters’ Association of Washington’s excellent workshops, MASC, and performance venues: www.saw.org.

Jody Marshall co-produced and performed on Peace of Wild Things. For more about Jody’s many musical talents and doings, please see www.jodymarshall.net.

MAHBOOD LEN SELIGMAN'S UPCOMING CD

Mahbood Len Seligman’s new CD, Head Over Heels, features Carey in a duet with Len, and in harmony with vibrant vocalist Wendy Lanxner. Len is a fine singer/multi-instrumentalist and long-time student of Sufism who often provides original music in diverse styles for interfaith worship. Cellist David Darling has commented about Len: “…soulful, virtuoso guitar playing; without a doubt, one of my favorite guitarists,” and interfaith spiritual leader/author Rabbi Zalman Shachter-Shalomi says: “Mahbood’s music is a delight. His new recording has realized the voices of great mystics from many cultures for contemporary America…Let your spirit soar with these songs.” To hear clips, find out more about Mahbood, and purchase your own copy of Head Over Heels, see www.mahbood.com.

NEW CDS BY LYNN HOLLYFIELD AND GRACE GRIFFITH

Carey has been providing some harmony and keyboard at several release concerts for Lynn Hollyfield’s wise and lyrical Layers CD. Others in Lynn’s usual coterie include Dave Abe, Jimmy Brink, Grace Griffith, and Dave Wolf. Carey also enjoyed opportunities to chime in with Lynn and Grace Griffith at concerts such as this year’s Christmas benefit for hungry and homeless people in Fort Washington, MD.

Blix Street Records recently issued a retrospective of highlights from Grace Griffith’s beautiful bounty of recordings—no easy feat, since everything Grace touches musically is a heart-filled gem. One of the songs which made the cut on the new CD, Sailing, features Carey and Grace in harmony (Leslie Phillips’ song “Carry You.”)

THE VALLEY OF LOVE AND DELIGHT

At the two-day Washington Folk Festival in Glen Echo, Maryland, Carey performed with Finnegan’s Jig and with Grace Griffith and Lynn Hollyfield, and then she did her own set with a full band. In addition to the burbling robins, Carey’s group for the day included Bob Williams, Scott Giambusso, Dan Reynolds, and Steve Bloom, who collectively elevated the music to a much higher realm.

HEART EXPANSION ‘ROUND THE WORLD

Carey’s recorded music has been used in some exciting ways, such as:

  • in a video about the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge, a charity with folks from all three major Abrahamic faiths and many other religions working together to help local people--many of whom have suffered from the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav.

  • as a selection aired within a broadcast marking Yom HaShoah--Holocaust Day--on WorldWaves, a program dedicated to “Peace, through good music” on Radio Upper Galilee, Israel, near the Lebanese border. (Menachem Vinegrad, the host, is also co-organizer of Jacob’s Ladder Festival, an acoustic music lovefest in its 30th year).

  • at Body, Mind & Spirit gatherings, yoga classes, and women's spirituality groups.

  • on Danny Watson's Folk Show in Australia, where the host pondered--through selected songs--the meaning of war, in conjunction with ANZAC Day (roughly the Australian and New Zealand equivalent to our Memorial Day).
