Janie Wilson, The Blue Album
August 2000
By Ron Weinstock
Janine Wilson's maturation as a performer has been captured in her self-produced recording, "The Blue Album". Recorded mostly in Austin, Texas (although some was done here), it evidences how far she has grown as a singer.
She shows good taste in her selection of material, including songs from a variety of sources, including Helen Humes, Gaye Adegbalola, Elvis Costello, and Slim Harpo. She has a big voice although she is effective when singing in a quieter vein. Costello's "Almost Blue", with simple accompaniment, may be the highlight of this recording although her smoldering rendition of "I Smell Trouble", is also quite strong. .overall, this is a very solid disc that will please her fans and gain her new fans.
