Folk & Traditional Arts Mini-Grant

The deadline for submitting applications for the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities'
Folk & Traditional Arts Mini-Grant is January 6, 2005! The Commission is offering quick
response small-scaled grants to D.C. based artists, dancers, musicians, scholars, and
organizations practicing or supporting folk traditions. The amount of support for the Folk &
Traditional Arts Mini-Grant ranges from $500 to $1000 dollars and can be put towards a
range of community-oriented activities, including public programs, festivals, performances,
workshops, lectures, etc. Applicants must be D.C. individuals or organizations. Please visit

The Commission is happy to review any applications and/or speak to potential applicants
about the grant. A workshop for interested applicants will be held at the Commission offices

Grammy Award Nominees

Airshow's David Glasser and Matt Sandoski, along with producer Lance Ledbetter,
were nominated in the Best Historical Album category for the epic Goodbye, Babylon box set.
It's a 6-disc collection of early 20th century Gospel music, on Lance's Dust-to-Digital label.
Dave and Matt were assisted in their restoration and mastering work by David Henry and
Ryan Avery. The project also earned a nomination for package designer Susan Archie.

Al Petteway - has been nominated for a Grammy Award for his contribution to the "Henry
Mancini: Pink Guitar" CD. The CD has been nominated in Category 10 - Pop Instrumental
Album.

Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer have done it again. The GRAMMY® winners (“Bon Appétit!”
Best Musical Album for Children 2004) have received their 10th GRAMMY® nomination.
In fact, every CD Cathy & Marcy have released since 1997 has won a nomination, including
2 produced for other artists (Tom Paxton, Dinorock Productions).

This year’s nomination is for producing “cELLAbration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins” on
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The recording celebrates the music of Ella Jenkins,
2004 GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award winner. It is a spectacular collaboration of
artists including Sweet Honey in the Rock, Pete Seeger, Tom Chapin, Mariachi Los Camperos,
John McCutcheon, Riders in the Sky, Mike Stein, Michele Valeri and Spencer Perkins. Cathy
& Marcy also performed their own tracks, played 15 instruments, and pulled together a fabulous
team of engineers (Bob Dawson and Jim Robeson of Bias Recording, Pete Reiniger of Smithsonian
Folkways Recordings). There is a wonderful children’s chorus from University Park Elementary
School conducted by Betty Scott, a GRAMMY® winner herself for conducting the Maryland Boy
Choir on the Washington Chorus production of Britten’s “War Requiem”.

Studio News
Shuman recording will be completing their studio buildout
for the little schoolhouse near Charleston W.Va.on Dec 5th
They will be webcasting, filming and broadcasting live every week.
They are currently soliciting Bluegrass, Celtic, Gospel and other
roots music for the show.

Scott Shuman just recorded the Nashville group BR 549
and Puntamayo label artists Marianna Montalvo and Belo Velosa in 5.1
surround sound for Wordview network studios.
Pre Thanksgiving week , he will be recording Chic Correa at the Merrifield studio
Thanksgiving weekend , "Fynsound" will be completing tracking with producer Karan Ashbrook
for their inspired new CD at Shuman Recording studio in Falls Church.
Singer Songwriter Robin Helzner has just begun recording the tracks for her new CD there
in ProTools HD
In February , Scott is looking forward to working with for Blues artists
Henry Townsend and Robert Jr Lockwood in the Falls Church Studio
