Michael Penn added to June 19 Mountain Stage NewSong Showcase at Strathmore along with Guy Clark, Loudon Wainwright III and Last Train Home

A total of 20 semi-finalists were announced today as part of the Strathmore Regional Round of the 2005 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, presented by Performing Songwriter Magazine, one of the nation’s leading contests for emerging singer-songwriters in all genres of music. The Strathmore Regional Round was open only to residents of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Entries are still being accepted through June 15 in the national NewSong Contest, open to anyone.

The Strathmore Regional Round semi-finalists go on to compete in a semi-final round at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, in the Mansion at Strathmore, in Bethesda, Maryland. Performing songwriters chosen by judges at that event move on to a Regional Round finals June 19 at the Music Center at Strathmore. The top winner chosen that day becomes a finalist in the national NewSong contest and will compete in the national finals during the Mountain Stage NewSong Festival, Aug. 24 to 28, at the festival’s new home in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

The NewSong Contest Regional Round at Strathmore is co-sponsored by the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA), the Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW), the Baltimore Songwriters Association (BSA), and FOCUS. The June 19 finals are part of a daylong series of events that conclude with a 7 p.m. Mountain Stage NewSong Showcase, featuring Guy Clark, Loudon Wainwright III, Last Train Home, Michael Penn and other acts to be announced. Michael Penn is the latest addition to the lineup for the June 19 Mountain Stage NewSong Showcase at Strathmore. Described as "the thinking person's pop musician," Penn has won widespread praise for his lyricism and creative edge as one Vox reviewer noted: "Penn stands alongside Randy Newman in the foremost rank of American lyricists. His freeform songwriting creates tracks of startling shape and originality, offering literate reflections on the human condition."

He joins a lineup that includes acclaimed Texas singer-songwriter Guy Clark, whose folk and blues-influenced country has earned him plaudits as a “national treasure,” and whose character-rich songs are backed by a mean slide guitar. Also featured is Loudon Wainwright III, who first sprang to fame on the back of a skunk with his 1972 novelty song “Dead Skunk” and who has gone on to win fans worldwide with a body of material intended (as he readily concedes) to amuse, move, entertain, educate and irritate, not necessarily in that order. Filling up the stage with a wall of horn-drenched roots rock, Last Train Home is one of the hottest rising bands on the music scene with a rich, bold alt-country sound captured on the band’s recent release “Bound Away.”

The Mountain Stage show at Strathmore marks the 600th performance of the live performance music program, an American institution which for more than 20 years has showcased some of the finest musicians from around the world in all genres of music. Now in its 21st year, Mountain Stage with Larry Groce is taped live in concert halls and at events like the NewSong Festival, then broadcast worldwide on more than 200 radio and TV stations, XM Satellite Radio and “The Voice of America.” The show has a long and storied tradition of launching new acts to stardom and featuring national and international acts in all styles of music from traditional roots, blues and country, to avant-garde rock, world beat, country, jazz and more.
