Norman Blake is the Earl Scruggs of flatpicking; the guy who split the stylistic atom and was able to communicate simple melodies in driving and syncopated new ways. Using Orrin's arrangement of the Civil War-era tune "Lorena," the workshop will look at how melody notes interspersed with bursts of crosspicking and select mid-solo strums can set us squarely on the road to Blakeville.

Phil Mathieu played in a country and rockabilly band and performed Argentine tangos and Brazilian cholo music with his own classical guitar ensemble. He championed forgotten American composers from other centuries and played their waltzes, polkas and fandangos lyrically on nylon-string guitars.
Albert Gilson "Gil" Brown
Albert Gilson Brown, 80, who was executive director of several professional associations and also was a drummer in the Buck Creek Jazz Band for three decades, died Jan. 28 at the Arden Courts health-care facility in Annandale.
For more than 30 years, he was the drummer of the Buck Creek Jazz Band, a Dixieland group formed in 1977 at a house on Buck Creek Road in Temple Hills. Over the next three decades, the band made recordings and performed throughout the Washington area, on cruises and at jazz festivals around the world. The group disbanded in 2009.
