WAMA Thank You

WAMA thanks the Library of Congress Folklife Center, the Copyright Office, and especially Jennifer Cutting for putting together a wonderful workshop for WAMA on Weds. Nov. 12.

(left) WAMA members listen as Jennifer Cutting explains the symbolism in the Jefferson Building. (right) WAMA members check out the original hand-written note for "MY Favorite Things."

"What a lovely informative workshop! All that beauty and places to research inside the Library of Congress and I had never really seen it before...I just would like to encourage you to have more. I took a day off from work and I do not regret it at all. The different group leaders were well informed and I gleaned much. The building tour added so much to the experience." Dawn Vesco

29th Wammies Nomination Ballot

Thanks to all who submitted their votes!

Unfortunately, many of the votes had to be disqualified because only one artist/group/recording was entered in a category, and two different names were required. We don't like having to make so many disqualifications, but the rule was created to serve a higher purpose of getting a broad inclusive view of the entire DC music scene.

5 Things That Smart Musicians Do Every Day
11/19/2014
By Dylan Welsh
everyday

"The sheer number of tasks that need to be completed on any given day can overwhelm anybody involved in music professionally. In today's industry, most musicians end up wearing many different hats in order to make ends meet. Everywhere you go, independent artists have to not only write and perform the music, but record it, market it, book shows, and do their own press. Getting organized is essential to avoid getting bogged down by tasks and overwhelmed to the point of stagnation."

"A performance agreement is a deal that you, the performing artist, strike with a promoter or venue owner (also known as the purchaser). While you can have a verbal agreement, a written agreement – even in an email – containing the essential terms may help avoid potential conflict or getting screwed over by the purchaser, and may prove to be more helpful in enforcing the agreement."

8 Things You're Forgetting to Do on Show Day
Nov. 7, 2014
by Ari Herstand
show-day

"I meet (and play with) too many musicians who don't want to get to the venue early enough. Some like to arrive shortly before they need to play, others slightly before doors, and still others feel they're being responsible by allowing the bare minimum amount of time they believe they'll need to load in, set up, and soundcheck before start time or doors. Until you have a tour manager, you'll need to designate pre- and post-show duties within the band. These jobs cannot be overlooked."
