ASCAP Writer’s Showcase Announcement

The ASCAP Writer’s Showcase will be held in Washington DC for the very first time! This is great news for the region’s writers, artists, and other industry professionals in the Mid-Atlantic area. We will now have a high profile platform to showcase our songwriting talent and further establish DC in the industry as a rich and diverse emerging music market.

Our guest host will be Stephen Schwartz, highly acclaimed composer for such successful Broadway shows as Pippin, Godspell, and his newest smash hit, Wicked.

The Program: ASCAP will select 12 winning songs submitted by songwriters from the Mid-Atlantic region. Each songwriter (or their designated singer) will perform one song in this showcase evening. An established New York cabaret artist will be available to perform for songwriter’s who need a singer to perform their winning song. The genres of music will include musical theatre, cabaret, jazz, and light pop. Songwriters from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region can compete – this includes DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Writers do not have to be ASCAP members. This showcase will directly follow a one-hour interview of Stephen Schwartz, our guest host, by Michael Kerker, VP for Musical Theatre, ASCAP.

Guidelines for Submission:

· Submissions due by March 17, 2006

· Three song limit per songwriter submission – musical theatre, cabaret, jazz, & “light” pop

· All submissions must be on CD with lyrics attached

· Writers can be ASCAP or BMI, or independent

· There is NO fee for song submissions

· NSAI – Nashville Songwriter’s Association International

Legislative Participation: ASCAP will organize an activity for members of Congress who have oversight responsibilities for issues affecting the music industry. There will be a legislative reception and some involvement of selected Members of Congress in the Showcase event.
