WAMA BAR CODES
The Washington Area Music Association provides Uniform Product Codes (UPC) as a service to its members. We do not sell them, although there is a one-time processing fee to cover our costs. You must be a WAMA member to order a Bar Code from WAMA. It is required that there be a member statement on the package. A WAMA logo with the word "MEMBER" next to it qualifies as a member statement.
The UPC we or any other group issues is just a number that is assigned to the individual product. Nothing automatically comes up when the UPC is scanned. When you take your CD to a store, you tell them what the product is and they enter that info into their computer. That info is what then comes up when the UPC is scanned.
That info is also what is sent to SoundScan. For internal accounting purposes only, SoundScan lists WAMA as the parent label for products with codes from WAMA. The artist's label is listed as a sub label. Similar to they way a distributor such as SONY might have one of its distributed labels listed. WAMA has no financial interest in products with a WAMA bar code.
WAMA charges a one-time processing fee of $30 to issue the Bar Code. If there is an additional format (such as CD or Cassette) $10 per additional format is charged for the UPC numbers. WAMA will send you a camera-ready print of the Bar Code for you artwork. A computer
graphic file on a DOS disk is also available for $7.50. A graphic file can also be sent as an attachment to E-mail for $5.00.
