The CD is intended to be a compilation representative
of modern, alternative and pop rock of the greater Washington
area. DC101 and WAMA will sponsor CD Showcases at area
clubs. Each Showcase will feature live sets by 2 or
3 bands from past WAMA CDs, and/or bands submitting
material to the seventh CD.
Selection
WAMA has budgeted for the CD to contain up to 19 cuts.
The cuts will be selected by a panel of Washington-area
music-industry professionals. No individual who represents
an artist or band in consideration is eligible to be
on the selecting panel. The panel will select artists/bands
based upon the total performance, production, and songwriting
quality of the submitted composition. The judging will
be "blind" -- i.e., judges will not be told the name
of the artist or band before or during the judging process.
All songs should be four minutes or less. The total
duration of the CDs cannot exceed 74 minutes (i.e.,
an average of four minutes per cut). If the duration
of the 19 highest-ranked cuts on each CD totals over
74 minutes, then WAMA, in its sole discretion, may pass
over any cut longer than 4 minutes and substitute a
shorter cut that ranked slightly lower in the judging.
Before doing this, WAMA will offer the higher-ranked
band the option of editing their cut to four minutes.
Each artist or band selected to be on the CD must
pay $200 (WAMA members) or $230 (non-members) per selected
cut to defray the cost of the project.
Distribution
WAMA is a nonprofit entity conducting this activity
to promote the Washington music scene and the bands
selected to be on the CD. WAMA will distribute the disc
to qualified music-industry executives. Recipients of
the disc will include anyone that WAMA, in its sole
discretion, deems to be in a position to advance the
career of one or more artists on the CD. Artists/bands
selected to be on the CD will receive the name and address
of the promotional recipients of the CD. Artists/bands
will also receive 20 copies of the CD (total per band).
If copies of the CD are left over after promotional
distributions, then artists/bands may purchase additional
copies on a first come, first served basis while supplies
last for the wholesale price. WAMA intends to place
the CD in retail stores and sell them to the general
public at WAMA sponsored events. WAMA will retain the
entire proceeds from any such sales. WAMA will pay no
royalties to performers on the CD. If retail sales generate
revenue in excess of expenses, they will be retained
by WAMA to support its activities in support of Washington
music and musicians.
How to Apply
Performers may submit up to three compositions. Each
composition must be submitted separately and each submission
must include:
- a. a "best quality" cassette copy of the
composition (only one song per tape). The cassette
tape may be duplicated onto a single reel-to-reel
judging tape, so it is important that artists/bands
submit the best possible quality cassette. Do not
submit master tapes at this time! Cassette tapes will
not be returned -- DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR ONLY COPY.
- b. a $15 (WAMA members), $30 (non-members)
non-refundable processing fee per song/tape (check
or money order only made payable to Washington Area
Music Association).
- c. a cover page with the name, phone, and
mailing address of the performer's manager or contact.
The complete submission must be received (not postmarked,
received) by May 22, 1997. The submission should be
sent to: WAMA/DCCD 7 1690 36th Street, NW - Washington,
DC 20007.
Artists/bands selected by the selection panel
will be notified by July 25, 1997 Within five calendar
days following notification, selectees must supply:
- a. the master tape of their cut. The master
must be in one of the following three formats: (i)
quarter inch, two track stereo, 15 or 30 ips, head-tail
leadered, with test tones at 1K, 10K, and 100 hertz
(zero level); (ii) half inch, two track stereo, 15
or 30 ips, head-tail leadered, with test tones at
1K, 10K, and 100 hertz (zero level); or (iii) digital
audio tape with test tones at 1K, 10K, and 100 hertz
(zero level).
- b. the participation fee (i.e., $200 members,
$230 non-members; this is in addition to the $15/$30
processing fee).
- c. label credits which specify the artist's
name; the writer and publisher of the composition;
public performing rights society (if applicable);
record label name (if applicable); and contact name,
address, and phone number.
If the deadline is missed, an alternate artist
or band will be selected. Master tapes will be available
for pick-up following generation of the CD DAT. WAMA
will not be responsible for master tapes that are unclaimed
after 45 days following notification that the tapes
are available for pick-up.
By submitting an entry, artists/bands agree that if
selected for the CD then:
- Artist/band grants WAMA the nonexclusive right
to manufacture copies of a CD embodying the selected
cut and to release them for promotional purposes and/or
for sale as described above without restriction and
without payment of recording royalties.
- Artist/band grants WAMA the nonexclusive right
to use the artist's or band's name, image, and likeness
for promotional purposes in connection with the CD.
- Artist/band shall retain copyright of the sound
recording and of the underlying composition; WAMA
shall own a copyright only in the compilation recording.
- WAMA will not be responsible for paying any so-called
mechanical (i.e., songwriting) royalties to the copyright
owners of the compositions on the disc; the Artist/Band
will be solely responsible for any mechanical royalties
that become due. As such, Artist/band agrees to secure
a mechanical license from the copyright owner of the
selected composition and provide a copy of same to
WAMA.
