  • Kym Fields (lead singer of Glassoline) released her new acoustic solo CD, recorded at Recording Arts in Merrifield, VA
  • MSP has released their new CD, Half Past Autumn.
  • The Choral Arts Society has released a new CD, A Choral Tribute to Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr., The First Ten Years. Recorded live at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the CD features 17 selections recorded from the first ten tributes. Groups on the CD include the Choral Arts Society of Washington, the Duke Ellington Concert and Show Choirs, The Howard University Choir and Gospel Choir, the Chevy Chase Elementary School chorus, the DC Youth Chorale, Wesley A. Boyd and the Total Experience, the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Chamber and Women's Choirs, the Young Adult Fellowship Ensemble of Metropolitan Baptist Church, and the Shiloh Baptist Church Gospel Choir. All profits go towards offsetting the cost of the CD, future tributes, and the organizations community and education activities.
  • The new CD Raise a Ruckus (Hightone Records) by Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun, is expected this spring. The CD was recorded in early January at Cherry Ridge Studios in San Antonio, the same studios where Doug Sahm recorded his Americana Chart-topping CD, Get A Life.   • Falling Mountain Music announces the release of The Windy Day by Linda Hickman & Tabby Finch. Linda, a newcomer to Falling Mountain, is best known for being a founding member of Celtic Thunder. This recording is a collection of original pieces that showcases her prowess on flute, Irish flute, pennywhistle, and Native American wooden flute.   • Mary Sue Twohy, singer/songwriter, released her debut CD, called Training Butterflies. Produced by Pete Kennedy at Maple Ridge, guest artists include The Kennedys, Al Petteway, Amy White and Tim Crowe.
  • An Annapolis Christmas, a CD compilation of Annapolis artists features Mary Byrd Brown and Rob Levit, who tackle their arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. The CD was brainstormed by Steve Alexander of Digital Bay Recording, in an effort to promote his new studio and to showcase local talent. Steve recently relocated from Nashville.   • Ruthie & The Wranglers have issued their new CD, Life's Savings, on Lasso Records. Recorded at Hit & Run Studios in Rockville, the album was produced by Ruthie & The Wranglers bassist and vocalist Mark Noone.
  • The Kennedys have released their new album, Angel Fire (Rounder/Philo Records), and are currently touring to promote the CD. Angel Fire, The Kennedys' third album, was self-produced and recorded in their own 16-track studio.
  • Iona recently announced its sixth recording, The Sound of Iona (Barnaby Productions, Inc.).
  • Rusty Mason announced the release o f his new CD, On Angels Wings We Fly.
  • BluesWorks has released their new CD, Far From Home.
  • Washington, DC-based modern rock band Euphoria announced their new CD, Another Night In Normalville. The album was produced by Don Zientara of Inner Ear Studios.

  • Abbott Promotions told us that a new CD by Neglected Sheep has been released. Produced by Rob Tavaglione of Catalyst Recording, Neglected Sheep's music is a mixture of alternative rock and pop.
  • Cloud Party has released its second CD, Everything and Nothing.
  • Cindy Cain has released her new CD, Love Contest. Produced by Steve Wolf, players on the CD include Rusty Bogart, Justin Lees, Adam Friedman, Gary Gregg, Christ Watling, and John Cocuzzi.
  • Modern Yesterday's new album, on the Jireh Records label, features 13 songs. Most of the new record (12 songs) was produced by David Kershenbaum, a Grammy winning veteran who has worked with the likes of Tracy Chapman, Bryan Adams, Joe Jackson, and Super-tramp. His talent was combined with the input of the band and the engineer on the project Duane Baron (another heavy hitter with major production credits under his belt). In addition, the band added a thirteenth track this summer, Drag Me Down, which was produced by the band and mixed by Brad Cook (Foo Fighters).
  • The Adam West/Candy Snatchers split 7" is here. The Adam West side has a special mix of Vanilla, a tune that will end up on the next CD 13 de luxe. The Candy Snatchers side has a cover of the Teenage Head classic Picture My Face.
  • The Adam West/BellRays split 7" should be out very soon. The Adam West side will include a cover of the Cream song SWLABR, while the BellRays side has a cover of the Saints song Night in Venice.

Studio News

Recording Arts

Recording Arts Studio in Merrifield, VA, has been working with The Shenanigans on their new recording. Also working on CD projects in the studio are Michelle Swan, Reggie's Loose Tooth, Touch, Carey Colvin, Michael Sternberg, Morgan Rowe, and 45 Spiders.

Bias Studios

Mary Chapin Carpenter lent her vocal talents to an upcoming release from the legendary Celtic group The Chieftans. The song, The Deserted Soldier, was produced by Paddy Maloney and features Maloney on penny whistle and Matt Rollings on Piano. Bob Dawson is currently working with Rounder Records artist John McCutcheon on his latest project, SpringSongs. Some of the musicians featured include John D'earth, Moondi Klein, John Carros, Pete Kennedy, and Kevin Davis. Dawson is also mixing with Peter Kater and Chris White for their second release as the duo Flesh And Bone. Entitled Pagan Saints, this album features Tony Levin, Wade Matthews, Glen Velez, and Paul McCandless.

Dawson is working with John Jenson on a project of jazz standards, and with the rock band The Spoilers. He is also mixing a project for the Howard University Jazz Ensemble. Heidi Gerber is putting the finishing touches on Celtic harpist Jo Morrison's CD, The Three Musics. Heidi is engineering and producing this project. Heidi is also tracking and mixing a project for the rock group Summer Rain. Jim Robeson has been tracking and mixing for rockers Chime, and finalizing mixes on Lynn Morris' latest CD on Rounder Records. Chris Hillman, Tony Rice, Larry Rice and Herb Petersen have been working at Bias on their upcoming acoustic release tentatively titled Hillman, Petersen, Rice and Rice: Out Of The Woodwork, Volume 2. Billy Wolf has been tracking and mixing the project. Engineer Frank Marchand has been busy engineering and producing tracks for The Almighty Senators.

John McCutcheon and co-producer/engineer Bob Dawson have been honored by NARAS with a nomination for the Grammy Award in the category Best Musical Album for Children for McCutcheons record Four Seasons: Autumnsongs (Rounder Records). Bob has also been busy tracking and mixing with Mary Chapin Carpenter and producer John Jennings for her upcoming compilation CD for Columbia.The disc will include several new tracks as well as many previously unreleased tracks.

Bob Dawson is the tracking and mixing engineer for saxophonist Marty Nayu's latest release, tentatively due in late March.The CD is a collection of standards entitled Strings Attached: Marty Nayu Plays Arrangements by Scott Silbert. It features a string section in addition to Marty's quartet, which consists of pianist Robert Redd, John Leonard, and Dominic Smith. French horn player David Kolo also plays on the recording.

Engineers John Alagia and Jeff Juliano were in recently mixing the Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds acoustic CD, Live At Luther College, which debuted on the Billboard Chart at #2.

Engineer Jim Robeson recently recorded for singer/songwriter Toshi Reagon and her band Big Lovely for a track entitled Real Love. The song also features Sweet Honey In The Rock. Jim has also been tracking and mixing for producers Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. Fink is producing Tom Paxton's latest project, and Marxer produced a children's record for Sue Trainor called Under Tables, Out Back Doors.

Fiddle player Andrea Hoag is working on her latest project with engineer Heidi Gerber. Gerber is also producing rock group Offtrax, and singer David Goettee for his inspirational music project.

Billy Wolf has been in the studio tracking and producing Eddie From Ohio and the Seldom Scene.

In Virginia, Charlie Pilzer mastered four CDs for upcoming TV series, Africans in America; soundtrack for WGBH/Rykodisc; producer Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon recorded at Bias. Cue Recording Studio

Cue has busy working on several interesting album projects: The artist Inoj is finishing her new album for Columbia Records in Cue's Studio "A" after enjoying the success of her last single Time After Time which recently went gold, also recorded and mixed in Cue's Studio "A" with Ken Schubert engineering. Salt 'N Pepa's last album achieved gold sales which Cue is proud to have recorded and mixed the title track Brand New with Maestro and Rob Jazayeri producing, also with Ken Schubert engineering. Everything recorded a track in Studio "A" which is soon to be out on the new Capricorn Records compilation with Chris Murphy twisting the knobs. Frank Irven's metal group Wyzard finished a terrific CD with Michael Fath producing and Doug Johnston engineering. The notable band Garbage also had Maestro and Rob Jazayeri do a remix of their track Special in Studio "A". The Nighthawks just finished recording and mixing their new album in Studio "A" with Mark Wenner producing and Chris Murphy engineering.

Shuman Recording

The St. Louis label Bluebird Records has just released Shuman's recording of the legendary blues man Henry Townsend. The studio's recording of Squeeze Bayou's Steppin' Fast won the Louisiana Cajun French Music Association Prix Dehurs de Nous award for best out-of-state recording. The Celtic group Iona just recorded The Sound of Iona at Shuman's. The CD was completed using the studios new mastering capabilities. Noted folk-singer Ed Trickett is currently tracking his newest album on the studios' 24-track Studer. The project is being produced by Ed and Charlie Pilzer. Songwriter Amy Silver has been working in the studio with guitarist Don Osher to complete their most recent project.

Pyramid Digital Productions, Inc.

Pyramid has engineered and produced Ritmo Junction's newest CD, Suburban Descarga for CSR Records. Pyramid has also recorded full length CDs for Billy Andrews, Mulugeta Beyn, and Kevin James, as well as EPs by The Next Millennium, Squash, Mourad Shahi, and Xavier.

Recording Arts

Richmond's Mudcat Jones has been in tracking a new project. Tracking and overdubs have been done on emmett swimming's new CD, slated for release in late Spring/Summer. Some of the tracks were recorded at the 9:30 Club concert on January 15. Carey Colvin is in the midst of finishing her CD and expects a release in late Spring. Ebo did basic tracks last month for their CD.

Morgan Rowe is in the final stages of completing her project, A Night Like This. Kim Fields has completed work on her new CD.

Folk singer/songwriter Steve Gellman is returning to Recording Arts for his latest album, and Cletus Kennelly is slated to begin basic tracking next month. Michael Sternberg is in the final mixing stage of his project. Under the Deep Reverb Records umbrella, Arlington band Aerialist have been tracking for their new project, 45 Spiders were in tracking for their CD, and Alice Despard has completed her CD.

In the Studio

  • The Dreamscapes Project are currently working on their CD at Neptune Studios in Occoquan, VA.
  • Grainger is working on their second album, Phase II (GMB Records).
  • On the Fandango/Nomad collaborative label will be a Radio Birdman tribute album to include Candy Snatchers, Resin Scraper, Hellacopters, Gluecifer, Nitwitz, Nomads, Turbonegro, Adam West, Black Market Baby, Failures, Dead City Rebels, Crums, Spine Tinglers, Bon Führer, and many more.

Beyond The Region

  • Fandango Records and Nomad Records have coreleased a 4-song 7" EP by the Crums, a garage band from Virginia Beach that features Candy Snatchers singer Larry May on vocals.
  • Leni Stern won the Orville H. Gibson Award for best Female Jazz Guitarist of 1999. This is the fourth year in a row that Stern has won the award. The awards were presented in Los Angeles in February. The Gibson awards are presented yearly by the Gibson guitar company as part of a program to raise money for the Nordoff Robbins foundation.
    Leni looks back on 13 years of a brilliant recorded legacy with Recollection, her tenth release as a leader and 2nd for her own label (LSR). Featuring five brand new tracks. Two tracks previously unavaiable on CD. 73 minutes of music. The all-star cast of musicians includes: Bill Frisell, David Sanborn, David Binney, Kenny Wolleson, Don Falzone, Paul Motian, Dennis Chambers, Russell Ferrante, Don Alias, Larry John McNally, Wayne Krantz, Badal Roy, Lincoln Goines, Mike Formanack, Didier Lockwood, Gil Golstein and many more.

  • Steve Hubert (Stevie Guitar Sparks) originally from Chevy Chase, former lead guitarist/vocalist with Stillroven back in the early '70's is releasing his first self-produced CD with his Maui, Hawaii-based band, The Leisure Scientists. The album, Researchin' The Rhythm, is on House Of The Sun Recordings. The collection of 13 originals by this 4-time Kerrville "New Folk" songwriting finalist, entitled Flight Of The Magic Tortoise, was engineered by Doug White at West Maui Music, mixed by Tom Hall at Melody Line Productions (also in Maui) and mastered by Bob Gleason at Imagitrax in St. Louis. Continental Harmony

Continental Harmony, New Music for the Millennium, The American Composers Forum and the National Endowment for the Arts have launched an historic initiative, Continental Harmony, linking rural and underserved communities through the nation with composers to celebrate the millennium with a new musical work. Host sites will decide the kind of music which best reflects their history, culture, and hopes for the future and then choose a composer who will write the piece, reside in the community for several weeks, and help the local musicians—- town band, choir, children's ensembles—prepare the composition for performance during the millennium year.

As part of the celebration, communities across the nation will mount a performance of their piece on a single day, July 4, 2000, uniting all in an exciting new music festival to sound the millennium throughout the land. Balinese Gamelan Music Concerts

Gamelan Mitra Kusuma, based at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, DC performs the classical music of Bali with an ensemble of 15 - 20 musicians accompanied by graceful dancers in exotic costumes. The Gamelan Mitra Kusuma orchestra plays a range of styles, from classic to modern, on a modern Gong Kebyar ensemble of various sizes of metal-keyed "xylophones," to gigantic gongs and hand drums to produce the explosive, fast-paced, and glistening music.

Gamelan Mitra Kusuma rehearses most Wednesday evenings from 7 - 9 pm at the Indonesian Embassy at the corner of 21st and Massachusetts NE (just off Dupont Circle). The public is welcome, and potential new players (regardless of experience) are invited.

Legal and Business Issues Seminar

Maryland Lawyers for the Arts and NARAS will sponsor the 7th annual Legal and Business Issues in the Music Industry Seminar. Music insiders and attorneys speak about a variety of music industry issues. Speakers include Steve Janis, producer of "Let Me Clear My Throat," and music business attorney Scott Johnson. The seminar will be held on April 17 from 10 am to 5 pm at the University of Baltimore School of Law Moot Court Room. Admission is $14 at the door.

Tango Festival '99

On May 23 QuinTango and the National Building Museum are presenting Tango Festival '99. Entertainment includes a fabulous bandoneon player (Raul Jaurena) and tango singer (Marga Mitchell) from New York. The world exhibition ballroom champions, The Savoys, will be doing one number with QuinTango (they are currently using QuinTango's version of Jealousy in their performances). There will be an Argentine dance exhibition. And at the end the audience will be invited to try their own tango steps for about 30 minutes.
